La-Z-Boy UK is sponsoring a fast-paced charity soapbox race which is hitting the streets near our UK factory.

The Colne Business Improvement District (BID) Super Soapbox Challenge is being held on Father’s Day this Sunday and the event is expected to draw crowds of around 20,000 people to the town in Lancashire. Starting outside Colne Town Hall, competitors will get a flying start down a four-metre high ramp with the first cart being released at 11am by Paul Weller, the manager of Colne Football Club.

La-Z-Boy UK is one of the event’s sponsors and will be choosing the winner of the ‘Joker of the Day’ award. The trophy and a bottle of prosecco will then be presented to the chosen team by our HR manager Robyn Lee, who is based at our manufacturing site in Colne.

Adam Morley, head of marketing and operations at La-Z-Boy UK, said: “As our UK factory is based in Colne, it is really important that we play an active role in the local community. Events like the Super Soapbox Challenge are fantastic at bringing people and businesses together and we are delighted to be involved.”

Andrew Pearson, spokesman for The Super Soapbox Challenge Company, which is running the event for Colne BID, said: “It will be a fantastic, free community event for Colne which we predict will bring 20,000 people into the town for a fun-packed, family day out.”

BID Officer Aneesa McGladdery said: “These soapbox events are great for our shops and businesses, bringing in lots of families for a fun-packed day out and leaving a lasting feelgood impression on visitors from further afield.”

The event’s official charity is Pendleside Hospice, a good cause which is very close to the hearts of La-Z-Boy staff. At the end of last year, staff at our Colne factory gave the hospice a cheque for £3,606.86, raised through a number of different initiatives, including donating the profits from the factory’s tuck shops.

In addition to the soapbox racing, there will be a funfair and live music plus a street fair with stalls selling food, drink, arts and crafts. Spectators will be able to watch the action on big screens at either end of the course.
