The lazy guide to celebrating Halloween without the hassle

If you’ve left your Halloween preparations to the last minute, don’t worry. You can still enjoy the spooky season with these simple hacks to celebrating Halloween without the hassle.

Here’s the La-Z-Boy UK guide to a stress-free October 31.

1. Don’t worry about decorating your whole home

Decorating your home for Halloween can feel like a lot of effort for just one night. Choose a focal point to decorate rather than trying to transform every room. If you want to attract trick or treaters, transform your front door or give your windows a creepy makeover to let passers-by know you’re open to visitors. Inside your home, choose something simple like a centrepiece for the table or a ghostly garland for the fireplace.

2. Cut the carvings and draw a design instead

Carving pumpkins can be messy and time-consuming. If you’re short on time and want a low-effort way to create a display, try drawing a design on the pumpkin or adding large googly eyes instead. Painting pumpkins with acrylic or chalk paint can also produce some striking results. If you want to give carving a go but you lack confidence in your artistic talents, keep it simple. You can also buy stencils to make the task easier or use cookie cutters to create shapes.

3. Swap the party for a movie marathon

If you don’t have the bandwidth to throw a Halloween party, why not hold a movie marathon instead? Choose some grisly horror films, tense thrillers or spooky family favourites and sit back and relax on your La-Z-Boy sofa or recliner. Beck’s smart console unit includes a HiFi system which can be connected to your TV using Bluetooth so you can enjoy a great audio experience as you relax. Huxley and Atlanta are also available with a console unit containing a Bluetooth speaker, while Bella uses touchscreen technology to control your sound through your sofa.

4. Create ambience with mood lighting

One simple way to create the right Halloween atmosphere is through the lighting. Swap your usual LED bulbs with amber or purple ones for a quick and effective way of changing the mood. If you’re nervous of the fire risk posed by candles, there are plenty of battery-operated alternatives which even flicker like the real thing. Fairy lights in greens, purples and oranges will also help set the tone.

5. Embrace autumnal aromas

Make your home smell like Halloween with some cosy autumnal aromas. While pumpkin spice may be the most obvious smell to go for, alternatives include candied apple, smoky cedarwood or toasted marshmallow. If you don’t want to buy scented candles or reed diffusers, you can cook up a delicious smell using your hob. Add apple slices, cinnamon sticks whole cloves and a dash of vanilla extract to a pan of water and allow it to gently simmer until your home fills with the smell. Just make sure you turn the hob off before all the water evaporates. If you prefer a citrus scent, add orange slices, bay leaves, nutmeg and cinnamon to the water instead.
