If you’re heading off on holiday, you’ve probably put plans in place for your pets but what about your sofa?
Direct sunlight and hot temperatures can be damaging to sofas so before you jet off anywhere sunny, spare a thought for your three piece suite. Giving your La-Z-Boy sofa or recliner a little bit of tender loving care over the warmer months will help it last longer so you will have more months of comfort and enjoyment.
Before you leave your home to go away, make sure your sofas and armchairs are protected from the glare of direct sunlight, which can fade both fabric and leather. This may mean you have to shift your pieces into a different position in your living room. Alternatively, you could make sure the curtains or blinds are drawn so your furniture is safely in the shade until you return. If you prefer to leave your curtains open, you can apply a solar film to your windows which will protect your sofas from sun damage all summer long.
If you are using a house sitter or asking someone to come into your home to feed pets or water plants, make sure they know how to operate your La-Z-Boy safely first. Don’t just assume they will work it out for themselves, show them how to use the recline function in a way which will minimise the risk of accident or injury. Making sure they understand how your furniture works will also help avoid them damaging it by mistake.
If your pets are staying at home while you are away, make sure they are kept out of the living room. Even if someone is visiting regularly to check on them, animals become stressed when their routine is disrupted and their owners aren’t there. This will make them more likely to damage your sofa or armchair through scratching, chewing or urination. Even if your pet is unlikely to do those things, they may climb onto your sofas when you are not there to chase them off.
Adding a throw or cover to your sofa or armchair before you go away will provide some protection from sun damage and fading. It will also help keep pets off the material of the sofa itself. Throws can be quickly removed and washed when you return if necessary and if you pick one you love, it can even give your living room a new sense of style.
Before you go away, vacuum your sofas and then do it again when you return. It’s also a good idea to plump up the cushions to get them looking and feeling their best. If you have a leather sofa, consider taking the opportunity to use specialist cleaning and conditioning products, which will help provide it with some protection from drying and cracking during the hot summer months.
