For many people, January is the month they decide to join a gym, start a diet or set themselves a tough physical or mental challenge. But research suggests that most people struggle to stick to their New Year’s Resolutions for much longer than two weeks.

While you might feel under pressure to spring into action at the start of a new year, giving yourself more time to rest, relax and take things slowly could actually be better for your mental and physical health.

Here’s La-Z-Boy UK’s guide to embracing your lazy side in a positive way in 2025:

  1. Listen to your body

During the winter months, you will instinctively feel less energetic and more in need of rest. Cold weather, less sun and dark nights will leave your body craving more sleep so it can stay warm, conserve your energy and fight off any winter bugs and infections. Listening to your body and resting or sleeping when you need to will actually help you be more productive rather than less. Tired bodies are less able to function properly and sleeping well is vital for your mental and physical health. Sleep is when your bodies recover and repair and also when your brain commits things to memory. Pushing yourself too hard can lead to you feeling run down and burnt out and make you more vulnerable to illness. It will also make it harder for you to remember important things or learn new skills.

  2. Slow down

In a world where everyone is rushing from one thing to the next, it’s easy to forget that slowing down can actually be good for you. Taking time to sit back, put your feet up and appreciate what you have is good for your mental health and lowering your stress levels. Slowing down can help in lots of different areas of your life from making the right decisions to digesting your food properly. Experts suggest that chewing slowly when you eat can help prevent you eating too much as it gives your brain longer to recognise you are feeling full. It also makes food easier for your body to digest and helps you to properly enjoy and appreciate the flavours you are consuming. A slower approach to life also helps with mindfulness as you can take time to fully enjoy each moment instead of constantly thinking about your to-do list or what you need to tackle next.

  3. Enjoy some me time

Learning to enjoy your own company can make you feel so much more comfortable in your own skin. Instead of pressuring yourself to constantly make plans to meet up with other people, spend some time by yourself, reading a book, listening to music, watching your favourite film – the choice is yours as there is no one else to keep happy! It’s also a great idea to take some time where there are no distractions at all. It might sound boring but giving yourself regular opportunities to think can help you work out what you want from life and help you process your emotions and feelings, leaving you happier and more fulfilled.

  4. Take a breather

Most people don’t put too much thought into their breathing but how we breathe is vital to how well we feel. Quick, shallow breaths can actually make you feel more anxious and panicky and give you a dry mouth. It can also make you feel tired and even contribute to any existing health issues you may have. Taking long, deep breaths will help you feel calmer and make sure all areas of your body get the oxygen they need to thrive. It can take a bit of practice but training yourself to breathe in through the nose for two counts and out through the mouth for four will help you feel healthier and more relaxed.

  5. Create your own cocoon of comfort and calm

Investing in comfortable furniture will help you make the most of your relaxation time. La-Z-Boy UK offers a range of chairs and sofas which prioritise your comfort so you can sit back, put your feet up and enjoy a lazy moment. With so much choice, you’re sure to find the perfect products to create your very own haven of calm in your home.
