If you haven’t finished decorating your home for Christmas yet, there’s still time to get on board with 2025’s hottest festive trends.
But what themes will people be embracing in their living rooms this year?
1. Rustic woodland
This cosy theme works well if you love natural materials and the great outdoors. It seamlessly takes your home from season to season by giving autumnal colours a festive twist. Popular decorations which work well in this theme include pine cones, cute woodland animals and mushrooms. Look out for warm colours like cinnamon, russet, copper and mustard. Felt, paper and wooden decorations on a classic real Christmas tree work particularly well in this theme. You can also add to the ambience with fairy lights, candles and lanterns.
2. Sweet stripes
Red and white striped candy canes have become an integral part of Christmas decorations in many places. But you don’t have to limit yourself to traditional candy canes. This year has seen an influx in striped decorations in a number of different colours, including soft pastels and golds. Decorations which complement this playful theme include traditional bells and baubles which look like biscuits and sweets. Marks and Spencer has even introduced a Christmas decoration of its famous Colin the Caterpillar cake for 2025. You may also want to tie ribbons to your tree, as well as chairs, staircases and perhaps even your front door!
3. Nostalgic classics
If you’re yearning for a Christmas like the ones from your childhood, you might want to go for a vintage theme with classic decorations in red, green and gold. Handcrafted decorations like homemade paper chains, items your kids have made at school or crafts you’ve had a go at yourself work really well for this theme along with nutcrackers. Remember the aim is to celebrate tradition so go for mismatched items and unique pieces rather than making sure everything coordinates perfectly. This is also the perfect excuse to dig out that box of old Christmas decorations which might be lurking in the attic and giving some of the pieces from the past another festive outing.
4. Minimalist monochrome
If the idea of mismatched baubles from your youth fills you with horror, you may prefer something simpler and more stylish. Black and white may not seem like the obvious colour scheme for Christmas but it is one which has become increasingly popular this year. Simple minimalist decorations in black, white and neutral colours make a dramatic statement and look modern and chic. You can even go for a black or white artificial Christmas tree and decorate it in the contrasting colour for something striking in your living room. Glass baubles, black velvet bows and wintry white decorations will help you make monochrome into something merry.
5. Supersized celebrations
One trend which is proving popular this year is for supersized Christmas decorations. Think giant baubles, oversized ornaments and towering trees. The opposite of the minimalist look, more is more when it comes to this theme. Forget being subtle and embrace the enormous.
Of course, this decorating theme is space dependent and will work better with a large open living space with high ceilings than a compact home with little room to manoeuvre.
And don’t forget one of the most important parts of any living room set up – your armchairs and sofas. Essential for relaxing with friends and family over the festive season, you can tie your La-Z-Boy furniture into your Christmas theme by choosing decorations in complementary colours or adding blankets and throws to bring the look together.
