Show your mum you care without leaving your sofa on Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day this year is going to be different with lockdown restrictions making the usual meals out and family get togethers impossible.

Most people won’t even get to see their mum in person this year as rules state you can only mix with your household or support bubble indoors or meet with one person outdoors for socially-distanced exercise in your local area.

So how can you celebrate Mother’s Day and show your mum you love her without actually meeting up?

  1. Arrange an afternoon tea delivery

You might not be able to take your mum for afternoon tea but you can arrange for one to be delivered to her. Some bakeries and cafes are delivering afternoon tea hampers with everything you need to recreate the experience at home. You could arrange for one to be sent to your mum in time for Mother’s Day or make your own set with her favourite things to drop off at her door or send through the post. Just make sure you package it carefully if you’re sending it as a parcel so she doesn’t end up with a box of crumbs. You could even arrange to get the same afternoon tea sent to you and enjoy it together over Zoom or Facetime.

  1. Have a movie night

You might not be on the same sofa or even in the same living room but you can still enjoy watching a film together. Get some nice snacks in and arrange to start watching the same film at the same time. You could set up a Zoom call so you experience it together or just send each other messages and then have a chat about it once the credits roll. Having a shared experience can help you both feel close to each other even if you are physically miles apart.

  1. 52 reasons you love her

One really thoughtful way of showing your mum how much you care is to tell her all the reasons you love her and what makes her so special. Take some playing cards and write a personal message or memory on each card in the pack, then post it to her so she can read them all on Mother’s Day.

  1. Put together a photo slideshow

Select your favourite family photographs and put them together in a slideshow for your mum to watch and enjoy in her own home. You may not be able to have a day out in person this year but reliving good times from years gone by will remind you both that lockdown won’t last forever and you can get back to making memories together soon. You could even make the images into a photo book for a lasting memento.

  1. Plan a post-lockdown treat

If you can’t give your mum the Mother’s Day treat you wanted to this year, why not send her an IOU detailing your plans for what you will do together once lockdown is over. Planning a day out, trip away or just a nice meal in her favourite restaurant will give you both something to look forward to.

  1. Keep it simple with flowers

Sending fresh flowers may not be the most original idea but it is a classic way of showing your mum you appreciate her and bringing a bit of colour into her home. Lots of florists still have delivery slots available for Mother’s Day and the arrival of spring has brought lots of beautiful blooms with it. You can often add on some extras with your flower delivery like chocolates, wine or a card so your mum feels properly spoilt on her special day.

  1. Make time for a video call

Whatever you decide to give your mum as a gift this Mother’s Day, take the time to call her on Sunday and have a proper catch-up. Video calling gives you the chance to see each other face-to-face and you can get the whole family on to say hello. You could even play a game or have a family quiz together.
