The run-up to Christmas can be a frantic time with presents to buy, food to prepare and guests to entertain.
But once the day itself has passed, many people find themselves with some much-needed time to rest, relax and recharge their batteries. Twixmas is the term given to that period of time in between Christmas and New Year when lots of people have more time off work than usual.
With many workplaces shutting down until the start of January, it can be the perfect time to take a breather and reset so you start the new year feeling refreshed rather than stressed out and burnt out.
La-Z-Boy UK is on a mission to reclaim the word lazy and encourage people to take time to put their feet up, recline and relax. Our Long Live the Lazy campaign aims to take the guilt away from resting and help everyone create their own haven of comfort in their own home where they can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Here’s our guide to making the most of your Twixmas downtime:
- Take the pressure off
When you have time off work, it can be easy to feel like you have to make the most of the holiday by rushing around, whether this is heading for the sales, visiting family or doing some home improvements. While all these things are great, take the pressure off and allow yourself to have some days where you don’t have any plans at all. Ripping up the to-do list and giving yourself time to simply read a book, watch a film or do nothing at all can help you feel rested and relaxed.
- Enjoy a pyjama day
Make the most of your Christmas pyjamas (if you have them) by having a dress-down day where you stay out of the cold and embrace the comfort of loungewear. This is the perfect opportunity to catch up on your festive TV watching, eat up the Christmas chocolates and leftovers and curl up in front of a seasonal movie. All our La-Z-Boy power recliners come with USB ports and some even come with wireless charging too so you can keep your devices powered up while you relax.
- Make time for mindfulness
Mindfulness can help you connect better with yourself and how you are feeling. With so many of us glued to our phones and surrounded by distractions every waking moment, we can forget to simply be quiet, still and tune into our bodies. Practice mindfulness by paying attention to how you feel and your surroundings. Dismiss any thoughts about either the past or the future and focus on the present moment. Consider all your senses – what can you see, hear, smell and feel?
- Choose activities which help you relax
Relaxing and enjoying a lazy moment doesn’t have to involve doing nothing at all. Activities like mediation, yoga or a gentle walk outside can all help calm your mind and help you feel rested and relaxed. Prioritise self-care rituals, whether that involves face masks, skincare routines and bubble baths or a trip to the gym, writing a journal and practicing gratitude.
- Carve out time to be lazy in 2025
Once Twixmas is over, it is tempting to hurtle headlong into another hectic year. Instead of worrying about New Year’s Resolutions, make a clear intention that you will carve out time to rest, relax and prioritise self care in 2025. Just as you would plan events or days out, block off time in your diary or calendar to do simpler things and build lazy moments into your weekly routine. Regularly taking time to rest will help you avoid feeling overwhelmed and burnt out and make you more ready to take on any challenges which arise both at work and at home.
