Decorating your home for autumn and going all out for Halloween has always been popular in the United States but now more and more people are embracing the trend on this side of the pond.
Seasonal decorations are not just for Christmas and increasing numbers are choosing to give their homes an autumnal makeover. So how can you make your living room autumn-ready without breaking the bank?
Autumnal wreaths are a gorgeous way of adding a splash of seasonal colour to a door or even a wall. If you’re feeling crafty, you could make your own using autumn leaves and pine cones but there are also plenty of ready-made artificial options available which you could use again year after year. Wreaths in oranges, reds and browns work well and many designs incorporate twigs, leaves, berries, pine cones and other natural materials.
Pumpkins make great decorations and not just for Halloween. Displaying pumpkins of different colours and sizes is a simple way of introducing some autumn colour into your home and creating a stunning centrepiece on a coffee table or in a fireplace. And if you don’t want to worry about your pumpkin going mouldy, you can buy some pumpkin-themed decorations. Other gourds like butternut squashes also work well and can bring a harvest-style theme to your living room.
If you want to add some decoration to a table or shelf, fill a bowl with some autumn-inspired nature. Pine cones, acorns, conkers and fallen leaves work well or opt for some seasonal pot pourri. You can either buy some or make your own using pine cones, bark, dry leaves, essential oils, dried oranges, cinnamon sticks and cloves.
As autumn advances, the temperatures start to plunge so investing in some warm blankets, throws, rugs and cosy cushions will not only see you through this season but make sure you are ready to face the winter too. Add warm fabrics and plush textiles to your sofas and armchairs so you can cuddle up under them as the nights start to draw in.
A great way to evoke feelings of autumn is to introduce the colours associated with the season – burnt oranges, browns, yellows, reds and forest greens. This can be done with accessories if you don’t want to make lasting year-round changes. Earthy colours and neutrals like beiges and oatmeal and vanilla shades also work well with an autumnal palette.
